The Prestige

Sunday, July 16, 2006

I haven’t read/heard/seen too much about The Prestige, primarily because I haven’t devoted as much time to it as I have to Transformers. However, i’m really looking forward to it for one reason: Christian Bale <3. Oh, and it also stars Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, and Scarlett Johansson, and is directed by Christopher Nolan. Not a bad team.

The Prestige is based on the well-reviewed novel of the same name by author Christpoher Priest. The film is:

...a mysterious story of two magicians whose intense rivalry leads them on a life-long battle for supremacy full of obsession, deceit and jealousy with dangerous and deadly consequences.

I’m in!

The trailer looks quite interesting, and it seems like the movie may reveal some closely guarded magic secrets. If so, I hope they explain how David Copperfield flies.

Book review coming soon.

Pimp My Optimus

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

Optimus? Is that you?

The Internets are abuzz over this new leaked photo. It is allegdly that of Optimus Prime as he appears in vehicle mode in Transformers.

Goodness, I hope this is fake. Look here, Michael Bay. Change the look of Bumblebee, or any other Transformer if you like, but for god’s sake, let Optimus remain as we know him so well. Don’t turn him into this pimped out atrocity. He deserves better than that.

Transformers Will Tease You

Thursday, June 29, 2006

Sweetness! Here’s a crappy YouTube’ed version of the Transformers teaser trailer. Hit up the official site (bit slow at the moment due to massive traffic) for better quality. No shots of actual Transformers in this one, aside from a brief silhoutte, but damn, it has got me excited!

Spider-Man 3

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

If the teaser trailer is any indication, Spider-Man 3 will be the biggest, and probably awesomest movie next summer. It’s attached to play with Superman Returns, giving all haters out there yet another reason to see the Man of Steel in action on the big screen (or on a bigger Imax screen).

Update: I retract my statement about Spider-Man 3 being the awesomest movie next summer. I forgot about Transformers, which will clearly be the most awesomest movie. I don’t know how I forgot about it, and frankly, i’m quite embarrassed.

Best Hero Christian Bale, And Gnarls Barkley Is Crazy

Friday, June 09, 2006

The fans have spoken and voted for Christian Bale as best hero on the MTV Movie Awards. Christian gives an eloquent speech at a not so serious awards show, and disses Superman in the process. Go Christian!

On a related note, Cube wrote about Gnarls Barkley performing at the awards dressed as Star Wars characters: Vader on vocals, Obi-Wan on piano, Chewbacca on Drums, Stormtroopers on guitar and bass, Boba Fett on keyboards. Gnarls Barkley is fuckin badass:

Transformers

This movie is going to be a huge freakin advertisement for most car makers. The powers that be (filmmakers) have already got a Decepticon taking form as a Ford Saleen Mustang. Bumblebee will be a spiffy new Chevrolet Camaro, rather than the VW bug that we all know so well.

Other well known characters are being re-imagined. Optimus Prime will be a fire-truck, and word has it Megatron’s alternate form will be a jet of some sort. Other characters are as yet unknown, but i’m sure we’ll find out more soon enough.

Transformers have gone through big changes over the years. Most generation 1 characters were killed off in the movie to make way for generation 2 characters. Not the smartest move, but at least Gen 2 characters were somewhat interesting. Over the years however, Hasbro, through lack of creativity or who knows what, has ruined the Transformers, releasing series after series of shitty new toy lines and cartoons here in the US. The only worthy adaptions have been in comic books and Japanese shows.

Regardless, the original Transformers still remain true to my heart. I’ve got Seasons 1 and 2, and Transformers: The Movie on DVD. Stashed away somewhere in the garage are my Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime figures. Come July 4, 2007, i’ll be busting those puppies out and they will accompany me to the midnight screening.

Star Wars

Wednesday, May 03, 2006

So a while back, George Lucas announced he would never release the original, unaltered Star Wars films on DVD. Well, it appears Lucas has now changed his mind.

The original trilogy will be coming out on DVD this September for a limited time:

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you’ll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

It was only a matter of time. I’ve refused to purchase the Special Editions, Enhanced Editions, Super Platinum Special Enhanced Editions, and whatever else Lucas has released over the years. But he has finally seen the light...or he needs more money to cover the high cost of moving to The Presidio.

I suppose I’ll have to get my order in now before it sells out.

The Best Movie EVAR?

Friday, March 17, 2006

Snakes on a Plane, starring Sam “The Man” Jackson.

On a related note, we get our first glimpse of crazy, outrageous, highly exaggerated, mostly CG, drift action from The Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift. The Japanese sure know how to do it right. Sweet!

I would like the inevitable part 4 in this franchise to take place on the street of Mumbai, featuring souped-up auto-rickshaws. That would be so dope.

Fast and the Furious 3 - Tokyo Drift

Friday, January 20, 2006

For those of you who don’t know, there is a third film in the exciting Fast and the Furious franchise of films, coming out this summer, titled Tokyo Drift.

Check out some of the rides.

Drifting is pretty awesome, and if this movie can capture the excitement, it might just be worth checking out.

It is being directed by Justin Lin, who directed Better Luck Tomorrow, which I never saw, but is supposed to be good. But, he also directed the upcoming Annapolis, which looks super dumb. And according to IMDB, he is directing a remake of Oldboy (Oldboy, again for those who don’t know, is an amazing South Korean film by Chan-Wook Park, about revenge, and the fact that he is remaking this movie scares me, because I don’t think any american remake will do it justice).

Back to Tokyo Drift..it doesn’t have Vin Diesel, which is quite disappointing. There were rumors he would be in the third film, but I guess not. Not as disappointing is the abscence of Paul Walker. However, it does have Zachary Ty Bryan, the oldest brother dude from Home Improvement. Sweet!

So really, the only reason to see this movie is for the cars and cheesy entertainment. As long as it delivers on both, i’ll be happy.
