Go Speed Go!

Speed Racer looks pretty damn sweet. I’m excited about the movie, mainly to see how the Wachowski Brothers have advanced movie making technology and effects since the Matrix. The trailer shows the movie to be very visually pleasing, maintaining the feel of the classic television show.

See it here.

George Lucas

Thursday, June 21, 2007

Dear George Lucas,

Word is Frank Darabont had an awesome script for Indiana Jones 4. But for some reason, you decided it wasn’t good enough, even though Spielberg thought it was worthy. I still have hope however, because Spielberg is at the helm, and hopefully he’ll do a good job with salvaging the script after the hack job you put it through. Please, please. please don’t fuck this up like you did the Star Wars Prequels. The previous 3 installments are truly some of my favorite films ever (though some people think The Last Crusade sucked), and I would hate to see Indiana go out in a bad sort of way.

Regards,

The Dinoblog Management

P.S.: I will now put on my Indiana Jones fedora that I bought from Disneyland for the next one (1) minute.

My Inner Bhangrameter

Gotta give credit to AK for this one. Normally, I wouldn’t repost, but its too good not to. Seems like the audience doesn’t know what the hell Colbert is talking about.

Speaking of Amitabh, his heir apparent and prodigal son, Abhishek Bachan, announced his plans to wed Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai later this year. For those who don’t know, this is akin to Charles marrying Diana, or Brad marrying Angelina. These two are like the royalty of Bollywood, and pretty much the biggest stars at the moment.

I’m not much for entertainment gossip, but the reason I bring it up is so I can tell the following story.

Before I came to the US in ‘84, I lived, and attended school, in Juhu Scheme, a little suburb outside of Mumbai. This area is where all the big Bollywood stars lived, including Amitabh. At one point, Abhishek attended the same school as me, and we were in the same class. Anyway, we became friends and he invited us over to his mansion for masala chai and biscuits. We met his actress/mother Jaya Bachan, but sadly, Amitabh wasn’t there, and I don’t remember much else about this since it was 20+ years ago. Once we moved to the US, we lost touch, and I forgot about him until he broke through into Bollywood movies a few years back.

And now I hear he is getting married. Abhiskek, if you’re reading this, don’t forget to invite me to your wedding, but more importantly, to your bachelor party. I’m ready for some dhamal-masti.

The Prestige

Thursday, October 26, 2006

The Prestige. Wow. I thought The Departed was one of the best films of the year when I saw it a few weeks ago, but I’m going to have to add this movie to my exclusive list. Folks, this is a great movie.

Most of you may know the basic premise of The Prestige. If not, here it is from the official movie site:

From the time that they first met as young magicians on the rise, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden were competitors. However, their friendly competition evolves into a bitter rivalry making them fierce enemies-for-life and consequently jeopardizing the lives of everyone around them.

That sets up the basic storyline of the movie, but its best to go into it not knowing anything more, as I did. It’ll be a much better experience that way.

Of course, this review would not be complete without a mention of one of the best actors in cinema today: Christian Bale. I may be a little biased here because of my man-crush on Christian Bale, but his acting is excellent as always, althought a bit hard to understand at some points because of his heavy English accent.

I plan on getting the book by Christopher Priest next. I’m sure it’ll be as good, if not better, than the movie.

The Departed

Its been a while since i’ve posted a movie review here, primarily because most of the movies i’ve seen recently have been mediocre at best (with the exception of Little Miss Sunshine, which I thought was great, but never got around to commenting soon, and which I would give 4 out of 5 Dinostars).

Martin Scorcese’s recent films have been so so. I’ve missed his criminal genre of filmmaking which he basically defined with Goodfellas in the 1990. Gangs of New York was decent, but I didn’t feel it was vintage Scorcese. With The Departed, however, he is back and better than ever.

The Departed is based on the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, which is a great movie itself. Scorcese has incorporated many elements from that film into his movie, and has made it even better in some aspects. The Departed is violent and vulgar, like most of Scorcese’s mobster/gang/underworld movies, yet it has its moments of humor which would normally be out of place in a film of this type, but works really well here. Matt Damon, Leo DiCaprio, and Jack Nicholson as a psycho mob boss are all wonderful in their lead roles, and it has a good supporting cast.

I could go on, but sites like Aint It Cool and CHUD have more in-depth reviews, so you’re better off reading those. And if you haven’t seen Infernal Affairs, I would recommend seeing it after this movie. If you have seen it, then you’ll enjoy this. Either way, I absoutely recommend it!

Snakes In A Theatre!

Tuesday, August 22, 2006

I haven’t seen the classic masterpiece Snakes On A Plane yet, but I came across this story of some idiots who released two real life rattlesnakes during a showing of the film:

Live Rattlesnakes Released In ‘Snakes On A Plane’ Theater

Two live diamondback rattlesnakes were released in an Arizona movie theater during a showing of the new film “Snakes on a Plane,” according to Local 6 News.

Authorities said pranksters released the young venomous rattlesnakes in a dark theater at the AMC Desert Ridge near Tatum and Loop 101 in Phoenix.

The two snakes caused a panic in the dark theater, according to the report.

“That to me is very scary,” herpetological association representative Tom Whiting said. “I would hate to be watching a movie about snakes and have a rattlesnake bite me.”

Wranglers were called to collect the snakes, the report said.

No one was injured in the incident and, so far, the culprits have not been caught.

Officials believe the snakes were smuggled into the theater in backpacks.

“This thing is under someone’s chair and they go to sit and they just push your foot in the air and startle it—obviously all they got to do is startle this thing,” Phoenix Herpetological Society spokesman Daniel Marchand said. “It’s dark. They can’t see you, you know that well. If it’s scared, boom it strikes.”

The snakes were released into the desert.

Scary shit...makes me look forward to seeing it. And they should’ve killed those muthafuckin’ snakes in that muthafuckin’ theatre!

Constructicons?

Constructicon?

The latest development in the world of Transformers is the above photo from the set of the movie. Latino Review has posted it, along with several other photos, and they are alleging it could be a Constructicon. If so, I think this is potentially great news. How cool it would it be to have all 5 combine into a real-life Devastor?! Massive!
