More on Marc Ecko Tagging Air Force One

Friday, April 21, 2006

Yahoo! has more information on the Air Force One hoax put on by Marc Ecko and company.

Ecko acknowledged Friday that his company had rented a 747 cargo jet at San Bernardino’s airport and covertly painted one side to look like Air Force One. Employees signed secrecy agreements and worked inside a giant hangar until the night the video was made. Ecko declined to say how much the stunt cost.

“It’s not cheap,” he said. “You have to be rich.”

I gotta hand it to the guy for his dedication to pulling off this stunt. However, my earlier opinion still stands. I think he almost succeeded in pulling off a good hoax, but he failed in making the point he was trying to make. Oh well, try again.

Who Should We Invade Next?

Thursday, April 06, 2006

Austrailian dude walks around asking random Americans which countries they think America should invade next, and then asks them to locate the countries on a map: click here.

What people suggest: Italy, Cuba, Russia, China, India, Canada.

To the world: I apologize on behalf of all Americans, but it is quite hilarious.

Not Fooled

Saturday, April 01, 2006

April Fools used to be fun back in the day, when I was a kid. As an adult, I can still appreciate the funness of it, when April Fools pranks are pulled off well. I remember years ago when Kevin and Bean of KROQ switched morning shows with Big Boy on Power 106. That one got me good. Another year, if I remember correctly, they switched formats and played classical music all morning long (could have been another station). Both times I had no idea it was April 1st, mostly because it was early morning and I was out of it.

The last several years, my exposure to April Fools pranks has been limited to websites across the Interweb, because, well, I don’t get out much, and it seems that they have gotten lamer and lamer. Is it just me, or are people just not creative enough?

Consider the following:

Ain’t It Cool News - love this site and I read it everyday. Today, the author, Harry Knowles, lets the world know he will be featured in Penthouse spreads in the coming months. If you know of Harry Knowles, you know this is rather absurd. Yes, I understand that it is a joke, and that it is meant to be funny, but...its not. And people actually fall for this!

Verdict: Not Fooled

Ars Technica: great site for the computing enthusiast, read it everyday. Today they have have an article on Duke Nukem Forever. Duke Nukem has apprarently been a game long in development, because developers want to make it multi-platform. Ars claims that as a solution, the developers have decided to build the game utilizing the latest Web 2.0 technologies: Ajax, built on Ruby On Rails. The game will run through any web-browser on any platform.

Uhh.

Verdict: Not Fooled

Slashdot: “Slashdot Design Changes for Wider Appeal” - Slashdot claims they have done research showing that most of their readers are male...no surprise there. In order to appeal to a wider demographic, they have chosen to redesign with more appropriate colors.

Verdict: Not Fooled

Google Romance: “When you think about it, love is just another search problem. And we’ve thought about it. A lot. Google Romanceis our solution.” Google has decided to play matchmaker with the launch of this dating service, which is in Beta of course.

Verdict: Not Really Fooled

Clearly the quality and creativity of April Fools has declined. I understand the need to keep the tradition going. In fact, I endorse it. But if you can’t come up with something good and convincing, don’t bother.

Here Comes the Rain Again

Saturday, March 11, 2006

I would like to congratulate my friends out in the wonderful city of Phoenix for their first day of rain in 143 days. May you have many more.

Now that I think about it, the only person I currently know out there is Cube. So yeah, congratulations.
